01. YOU'RE A FILM PHOTOGRAPHER? PEOPLE STILL USE FILM? WHAT'S THE DIFFERENCE?
I get asked this question often. Yes, there is a large film community that keeps growing all the time! Film is a completely different medium all together, and it took me quite a bit of practicing to learn how to shoot it after I decided to make the switch from digital photography. While there are things that I miss about digital (ie., the convenience of seeing an image right after I take it, the cost, the fact that I could store hundreds of images on a memory card), film has made me a better photographer. Because there are only so many frames on a roll of film and because it is so costly AND because I cannot see what I've shot until a couple weeks later, I am more intentional about the pictures I'm taking. I'm posing my subjects more carefully, I'm constantly aware of my lighting situation, I'm looking more purposefully for distractions in my frame, etc. Also, I personally feel that I am able to achieve that soft, romantic look that I desire. I spend way less time in front of the computer editing pictures to make them look at certain way, and I get more time in with my family.
02. DOES SHOOTING FILM AFFECT YOUR TURNAROUND TIME?
It's just the opposite actually. As mentioned above, I spend less time editing pictures (because I'm not taking hundreds and hundreds) because only a tiny bit of retouching is needed. There is a 2-week turnaround time for portrait sessions & a 6-week (or less) turnaround time for weddings.
03. HOW DO I RECEIVE MY IMAGES?
Not everyone is familiar with the way things work with film photography. I send the rolls in to my lab in Utah (THE FIND LAB) where they develop my film and send me the scans in my email. I then cull through the scans and do some retouching of the images within the time frame I give you. You receive them in an online gallery where you can download and order prints as you please!
04. WHAT EQUIPMENT DO YOU USE?
I shoot with a Contax 645, a Mamiya 645, a Nikon F100 and many more!
05. DO YOU HAVE INSURANCE?
06. HOW FAR OUT IN ADVANCE DO YOU BOOK?
The earliest I book a wedding is 8 months out. However, if I can make it work, then I will! For portrait sessions I'd like a 2 week notice just as a courtesy.
07. DO YOU TRAVEL? I WAS THINKING ABOUT HAVING MY WEDDING IN HAWAII!
Yes, please! I have a serious case of wanderlust. I'm so ready to road-trip or jump on a plane, just say the word! Destination weddings are customized for what the couple needs. I MAAAAAAY, have a deal for you ;)
08. DO YOU HAVE A SECOND PHOTOGRAPHER?
Absolutely. I always have a second photographer/photographer's assistant at weddings to help shoot, load film, organize group shots, etc. It helps the day run a lot more smooth when I have another pair of eyes and hands!
09. HOW MANY PICTURES WILL WE GET BACK?
For a 6-hour wedding typically you will see 300-500 images and 90-minute portrait sessions about 60- 75. However this is just an average, not a certainty.
